PROJECT

Goals, actions, expected results and targeted areas of LIFE ConRaSi Project

OBJECTIVES

The main goal of the LIFE project ConRaSi is to improve the conservation status of three threatened raptor species occurring in Sicily (Italy): Bonelli’s eagle, Egyptian vulture and Lanner Falcon.

More in detail, the project aims at achieving the following specific objectives:

1 – NO ILLEGAL COLLECTION

Halting or reducing significantly the illegal collection of eggs and nestlings.

2 – HIGHER REPRODUCTIVE RATES

Enhancing the trophic capacity with the aim to rise the bird reproductive rates.

3 – DEEPER KNOWLEDGE

Getting an exhaustive picture of distribution and demography of the targeted species.

4 – GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION

Improving the knowledge of the Bonelli’s eagle on the base of genetic analysis.

5 – APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT

Adopting any necessary management tool so as to ensure the long term conservation of the targeted species.

6 – ENGAGEMENT OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Improving awareness and information of a broad local audience.

ACTIONS

The project objectives were achieved by implementing the following eight actions.

These are specific sound measures to achieve the conservation of the three targeted species.

3

1 – REMOTE CONTROL

Putting in place camera-traps and web-cameras to ensure a continuous monitoring of the nesting sites.

3

2 – EXHAUSTIVE MONITORING

Ensuring a thorough monitoring in space and time of the targeted species.

3

3 – ARTIFICIAL WARRENS AND FEEDING POINTS

Creating artificial warrens to improve the availability of the Bonelli’s eagle main prey species; setting up a network of feeding points in the Egyptian vulture areas.

3

4 - MARKING

Bird ringing and tracking through GPS transmitters.

3

5 - GENETIC ANALYSIS

Genetic sampling of feathers and other materials collected at the Bonelli’s eagle nesting sites.

3

6 - MODELLING

Development of habitat suitability models for each of the targeted species.

3

7 - ACTION PLAN

Delivering an action plan for the Bonelli’s eagle.

3

8 – INFORMATION AND AWARENESS

Carrying out several communication activities, targeting specific audiences.

INTERVENTION AREAS

The LIFE ConRaSi targets nine Special Protection Areas (SPA), i.e. priority areas identified in accordance with the EU Birds Directive.

  1. ITA020048 – Monti Sicani, Rocca Busambra e Bosco della Ficuzza
  2. ITA050006 – Monte Conca
  3. ITA030043 – Monti Nebrodi
  4. ITA020050 – Parco delle Madonie
  5. ITA050012 – Torre Manfria, Biviere e Piana di Gela
  6. ITA020042 – Rocca di Entella
  7. ITA010029 – Monte Cofano, Capo San Vito e Monte Sparagio
  8. ITA020049 – Monte Pecoraro e Pizzo Cirina
  9. ITA060002 – Lago di Pergusa

EXPECTED RESULTS

In this page section you can find the list of the main results that the LIFE ConRaSi Project has obtained.

At the end of the project the following results are expected to be achieved.

1° RESULT

Eradication of the illegal collection of Bonelli’s eagle nestlings and significant reduction of this threat for the Lanner Falcon.

2° RESULT

Increase of breeding success of the target species through the surveillance of the nesting sites.

3° RESULT

Improvement of the scientific knowledge regarding location, movements, threats, vital and demographic parameters of the target species.

4° RESULT

The development of a Bonelli’s eagle genetic database, in collaboration with the Institution for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA).

5° RESULT

The development of new management and conservation measures for target species within the Natura 2000 Network. Among these measures the most relevant is the National Action Plan for the Bonelli’s eagle, promptly adopted by Sicilian Region.

6° RESULT

Increased involvement of stakeholders and local communities regarding on the project themes.
